A video router is used for several important reasons in broadcasting. Routers allow multiple video signals from various sources (cameras, computers, videors, etc.) to be 'routed' (sent) to one or more devices such as monitors, switchers, recorders. Routers are invaluable when a device only has a limited number of video outputs, but needs to be distributed to many destinations. A single rack mounted router will eliminate dozens of throw down distribution amplifiers while providing the flexibility to repatch sources and destinations in just seconds. Routers also help ensure signal quality by reclocking (regenerating) each input providing the maximum video quality. This is especially important to reduce signal loss and jitter when using longer cables that can degrade the signal.
